The Coalition for Regenerative Ecologies and Agriculture (CREA) Study Abroad Program offers students from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and St. Philip's College (SPC) an immersive experience in regenerative agriculture and ecological stewardship. This six-week program includes two weeks in San Antonio and 3 weeks in Veracruz, Mexico, where students engage in hands-on learning with practices such as vetiver systems, agroforestry, permaculture, and beekeeping.
Participants gain technical skills and cultural insights, exploring the benefits of regenerative agriculture on biodiversity and ecosystem health. The program also emphasizes community-engaged methodologies, incorporating Indigenous and intersectional research practices.
Funded by a USDA Collaborative Hispanic Serving Institutions Education Grant, CREA aims to prepare underrepresented students for careers in food, agriculture, natural resources, and environmental sectors. Through this program, students develop a deeper understanding of ecological systems and cultural resilience, fostering a commitment to environmental justice and sustainable practices.
