This past weekend, the Coalition for Regenerative Ecologies and Agriculture (CREA) took an inspiring trip to visit the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project in Welder, Texas. Joined by fellows from UTSA and Alamo Colleges’ St. Philip’s College, students and professors experienced firsthand the impactful work being done to restore the cultural heritage and ecological balance of the land.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Ranch Manager, Denise Lozano and Lucille Contreras, the visionary founder of the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project. Lucille shared how this initiative is a powerful, women-led effort focused on bison land regeneration. This project not only revitalizes the land but also strengthens the cultural connections of Indigenous communities in Texas.
As we ventured into the fields, the experience was nothing short of magical. The buffalo, majestic and powerful, came right up to the car, allowing the students to witness the deep bond between the animals and the land. This interaction was not just educational but a profound reminder of the importance of regenerative practices.
After an enriching day, we returned to share stories and enjoy a meal together, further strengthening the bonds formed throughout the day. We also had the opportunity to support the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project by purchasing buffalo meat, a gesture that not only supports their cause but also allows us to bring a piece of this experience back home.
The Texas Tribal Buffalo Project is a testament to the power of community-led initiatives in promoting ecological and cultural regeneration. Terra Advocati is honored to stand with CREA and the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project in their mission to foster a regenerative and just world.
A special thanks to Denise Lozano for all of her coordination to make this happen on a beautiful Saturday!
This trip concludes the CREA Spring Fellowship Program... Catch us again in Veracruz, Mexico for our Summer Study Abroad Program with Vetiver Roots Technology and Estampa Verde, which kicks off this year in Las Cañadas!
CREA is generously funded by a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Collaborative Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) Education Grant.
