We are thrilled to share that Terra Advocati has received a new round of support to continue and expand Huertos Familiares, our community-based regenerative garden initiative in San Antonio, thanks to The Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation. This funding will help us nurture a project that is much more than a garden, it is a living network of memory, care, and transformation.
A Movement of Gardens
Huertos Familiares began as a vision to transform backyards, vacant lots, and shared spaces into thriving sites of nourishment and connection. Each huerto is a place where food, medicine, and pollinator habitats grow alongside stories, songs, and intergenerational knowledge. They are designed with regenerative principles: restoring biodiversity, creating shade and habitat, and inviting neighbors to share meals and wisdom.
What This Next Phase Makes Possible
With this new grant, we will be able to:
Sustain and Deepen Our Existing Gardens: Our first three pilot huertos have become community anchors. We will continue to care for them so they remain thriving models for neighborhood-led replication.
Create Digital Resources
Host Sobremesas and Gatherings: These intimate meals and celebrations will be opportunities to harvest together, tell stories, and share cultural traditions that make our communities strong.
Create Digital Storymaps and a Living Archive: Working with The NEST, we will document each huerto through photos, interviews, recipes, and planting guides, making these stories accessible to all and inspiring others to begin their own gardens.
Why It Matters
Huertos Familiares is part of a larger vision: to weave communities back together through land-based practice, food sovereignty, and collective celebration. It addresses food insecurity, supports pollinators and native plants, trains local leaders, and creates spaces of belonging where everyone is welcome.
Each garden is a seed of possibility. Together, they form a living network that grows resilience, beauty, and abundance across San Antonio.
